wove in 14 pictures

It starts with just 2 skeins of sock yarn.

(75% sw Merino\ 25% nylon – not necessarily important, but something somewhat strong works best, because the warp is under the most stress)

Direct warp on a 15″ rigid heddle loom.

Weft yarn same as warp.

Heddle up shuttle to the left, beat, heddle down shuttle to the right, beat, repeat.

(I keep my up = left & down = right consistent, that way I never undo what I just did :)

Miles and miles of tidy edge plain tabby weaving. The trick to straight selvages, stay obsessed with weft tension.

(This can be tricky with sock yarn, that dang nylon not only adds strength, but also adds stretch, bounce and recoil, if you pull it too taunt, it can suck in and pucker the edge.
I also don’t over beat between passes, just a light kiss, leaving a little more open weave now will result it a more supple scarf later, it will pull in on itself (recoil) once it’s cut off the loom. Alternatively over beat if you want something more dense/stiff in the end.)

Hemstitched. (4×3)

Hot soapy soak and a little friction, to aid in the bloom. (rosewood scent)

Blocked flat, trimmed fringe.

A smidge longer than my usual 100″ and a bit mellower than I expected.
..completely in love..

9-14-17 things

Last weeks cooler temps had me putting warmer wools on the loom. I made a scarf that reminded me of the Dr.Who television series I watched as a kid on PBS,

while not being a true fourth doctor version, I am totally in love with this plaid ..the wool on the other hand is scratchy as hell and with temps close to 90° this week, my lengthy Tom Baker will have to wait.

I always seem to come back to this happy place, no new puffs, but a few of my old favorites. I want to be the continual beekeeper, because there is just something so candy cute about these little hexi pops 💕

Canvas on canvas in the blackest of black, extra wide handle, perfect pockets and zero broken needles! I even added a little nylon charm loop to the front seam, sadly it vanished into the void of blackness, which happens every time I try to photograph a black object on a black object.

…now I’m thinking how many bags are too many bags, what to do with all the BAGS?!?

I’ve been sewing since I was a girl and have a massive fabric stash, but I still cave EVERY TIME to the lure of lovely fabric, how can you say no to organic cotton in a vintage 2015 print? You can’t. So I made another cute notions pouch, selvages and everything! 😍

..again thinking, how many pouches are too many pouches?!? AND I almost bought a another sewing machine ..wth is my problem.

(If you want to have a go at making your own vinyl pouch, there is a great tutorial on the BERNINA site from a few years back or Chicken Boots, offers a very similar zip notions case as a sewing pattern and kit!)

Ending again on a completely random note: I’m having a perfect cucumber afternoon ..yum 💕

life in creams, greys and pinks

Oh and some plaid…

Our girl is somewhere out east on a train home to us, we have been busily tiding up, running about and preparing for her and the holidays. Lately I’ve been finding my peace in trying to make anything and everything, like a one off zip pouch because I’m currently obsessed with clear vinyl or weaving crazy chalklegs tartan plaid potholders, using up all the bits and half balls from way down deep, just so I can feel less guilty about adding beauty to my stash. Today I’m all about baby goat face selfies and researching overnight oats.  I don’t always know what to write or bother with captions, awkward silences are my life :) I can’t seem to take myself seriously enough to think anybody cares, so that usually leads to major spreads between posts. In reality, I am a total bore who likes to take pictures of stuff and sometimes talk about things I love. When the words or images aren’t there, know my heart felt appreciation is, thank you for taking the time to visit and for putting up with my weirdo ♥
